3 Common Types of Toxic Mold

Commercial and residential buildings are prone to infestation of any of the 3 common types of toxic mold. Don’t get overwhelmed when you suspect a possible mold growth in your home. Instead, you must do a proper inspection, mold testing, and mold remediation to ensure your home is safe to live in.

What Toxic Mold Can do

One common thing about all species of mold is that each is unable to grow in the absence of water or moisture. However, since the mold spores can travel through air, constant inhalation can cause flu or allergy-like symptoms. Each person may have different reactions to allergens, and these symptoms may lead to more serious health conditions, respiratory diseases, or even death.

3 Common Types of Toxic Mold

Generally speaking, you cannot easily define black mold or toxic mold. However, there are common mold types known as toxic mold.

  1. Stachybotrys chartarum, Stilbospora chartarum, Stachybotrys alternans, or Stachybotrys atra are all commonly called back mold. Black mold thrives on damp and dead materials such as cereal grains, hay, wood pulp, and straw. Preventing further mold grow requires extensive knowledge and expertise.
  2. spergillus niger is present in the environment like no other species of mold. It can grow on walls after long exposure to moisture. You will notice black discoloration on wall surfaces and a whitish or yellowish color underneath. Constant exposure and inhalation to this mold type is hazardous as it can lead to hearing loss and other hearing-related issues.
  3. Stachybotrys echinata or Memnoniella echinata is a fungi species found in linens, cottons, canvas items, and wool. The same toxins produced by black mold are also produced by this toxic mold. This means indoor air quality is poor when your home is infested, and your health may be in grave danger.

Proper handling of mold spores is necessary to contain the scope and prevent it from being airborne as much as possible. Any airspace or ventilation can be a passage to spread mold and should be thoroughly inspected and treated.
